Learn More About EMDR

EMDR can be effective in helping individuals process and recover from traumatic events, or other stressful experiences, and the self-limiting or unhelpful negative beliefs connected to these events.

What are the

Benefits of EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based approach for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is unique in that it involves less talking than other approaches and it uses side to side movements, usually eye movements, during the session.

EMDR can be effective in helping individuals process and recover from traumatic events, or other stressful experiences, and the self-limiting or unhelpful negative beliefs connected to these events. If you are interested in exploring EMDR treatment, discuss with your psychologist if you might be a good candidate for this approach.

EMDR is recognized by the US Department of Veteran Affairs, the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization and others. The US Department of Veteran Affairs endorsed EMRD as one of the three psychotherapy approaches with the strongest evidence alongside Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure for the treatment of PTSD. Interestingly, the underlying mechanics of how EMDR helps to treat mental health & post-traumatic stress is not fully understood.

BENEFITS OF EMDR

EMDR generally does not need to include speaking in detail about the trauma. You will be asked to think about events but not necessarily verbalize this to your therapist.

The protocol for EMDR does not generally include homework between sessions

EMDR may require a shorter treatment timeframe than other PTSD treatments

What

EMDR Is Not

  • EMDR is not the preferred treatment for everyone who has trauma related symptoms; deciding if you are a good candidate for EMDR is a conversation and clinical decision between you and your psychologist
  • EMDR is not a “magic wand” or intended to be applied indiscriminately to a variety of concerns
  • It is not hypnosis; during all aspects of the processing you are fully conscious and in control
  • EMDR is not a fishing expedition or for the purpose of recovering or remembering forgotten or vague memories
  • EMDR does not need to use a light bar or other technology, as it is sometimes shown on tv shows. Using added technology is not shown to make EMDR any more effective and is often a matter of preference, both for the clinician and the client

My passion in counselling is forming a connection where people feel accepted and challenged to grow in new and meaningful ways. It is a privilege to be a part of the brave and vulnerable experience of unpacking struggles and working together to build new and lighter ways forward. I view counselling as an opportunity to help people cope with the normal and extraordinary challenges of life, lessen suffering, and settle more comfortably within the present moment.
